The Harz regional experience

The Green Belt winds its way through the Harz massif and its gently rolling foothills over a length of 100 km along steep granite cliffs, misty moors, gurgling brooks, mountain pastures in bloom and mystical forests. Natural treasures of a special kind await the visitor to the Harz. The Harz National Park and Nature Park, the biosphere reserve “Southern Harz Karst Landscape” and the “Geopark Harz•Braunschweiger Land•Eastphalia” offer some unforgettable experiences of nature.

In the TorfHaus, the new visitor centre of the cross-state Harz National Park, the motto of “Let nature be nature” comes alive for the visitor. Hikes with National Park rangers on the tracks of lynx and wildcats, which have found an unrestricted home here, turn into a vivid experience.

There are also exciting discoveries to be made about the history and development of the Green Belt in the Harz. In addition, the Harz border trail, which to a large extent runs directly on secluded border paths or the former “border patrol path” along the old inner-German border, connects nature, culture and history of the Harz in a unique way.

1000 years ago, the Harz stood at the centre of world history. Its ore and silver mines made towns such as Goslar and Quedlinburg rich. Their well-preserved mediaeval townscapes have been declared UNESCO world heritage sites. Going on a journey through the culture of the Harz is to take an exciting and pleasurable trip back in time through past centuries.

The Harz is full of adventure, and in all seasons it provides a wild and romantic backdrop for sports and activities exploring nature and history. There are many things to discover and experience. Get a taste of freedom and roam the forest on paths without frontiers, just like a lynx –along the “Green Belt” in the Harz.
